Coinye West? Kanye-themed Bitcoin alternative launches today

Move over Bitcoin, there’s a new digital currency in town, and it’s set to take over the Internet faster than Kanye West can steal a mic from Taylor Swift at an MTV award show. Meet Coinye West, a digital cryptocurrency that promises, “No screwed up fake ‘fair’ launches, shyster devs, muted channels, and fucked up wallets,” or in other words, a “cryptocurrency for the masses.” Well, that’s at least what its enigmatic creators (who have thus far kept their identities anonymous) told Vice’s music blog Noisey last week. Kanye West is not a God. In the amazing interview with the BBC’s Zane Lowe that led to his beef with Jimmy Kimmel, Kanye described himself as a “young revolutionary coming from Chicago.” But, how revolutionary can an artist be when they have won 23 Grammys and become known as a connoisseur of leather pants? Before his show Sunday at the TD Garden with Kendrick Lamar (to which tickets normally cost around $200), we’re left wondering: Does Kanye remain innovative and alternative or is he an entrenched part of the mainstream? Quit hating: Kanye West is making America confront racism

Kanye West certainly knows the currency of not being liked. His verbal candidness, which can simply be defined as not knowing when to shut the hell up, has made him the perfect centerpiece for media fodder. West called out then-President George Bush on his disturbing post-Katrina apathy, infamously tap danced all over the feelings of Taylor Swift at the 2009 VMAs, and recently denounced corporate-sponsored music (as well as the Jay-Z/Justin Timberlake collaboration “Suit and Tie”). Whether or not you stand behind West’s antics, the man knows how to spark dialogue — even it if means inadvertently showing just how racist America remains. More
