11 Questions for Trayer Tryon of Hundred Waters
Music

The Gainesville, Florida band Hundred Waters’ latest album, “The Moon Rang Like a Bell,” (which was released on May 27 via Skrillex’s OWSLA label) is an intimate, nocturnal album of atmospherics, whispering in your ear and quietly getting under your skin.  The production is immaculate and detailed, practically begging for repeat listens.  Frontwoman Nicole Miglis’s gorgeous voice, along with her vivid, dreamlike lyrics, fills out the band’s electronic yet earthy soundscapes, coiling around each other with the unity of two lovers.  The album has received critical acclaim, further marking Hundred Waters as an act to keep your eye on. Looks like we may be experiencing some inclement weather this weekend, so rather than going forth with that really long bike ride you were planning, change your entire schedule around to be at one of these concerts. Don’t try and play like indoor concerts are only a winter thing, okay? Some of the best punk sweat comes out in the spring and summer, don’t deprive yourself of that. More

Lots of big tickets rolling through town this week, which makes you wonder if Boston is becoming one of those cities where bands don’t want to waste a weekend night on us, so they tour through here on Mondays and Tuesdays instead. No hope in stressing it I guess. If anything, it’s just more of an excuse to party in the middle of the week. More

This week is shaping up to be a real party, people. Between cinco de Mayo on Monday, the Bruins and the Habs all week, and shows from M.I.A, JaRule, and more, there’s little reason to even call this a work week. Also, side note: I wonder if JaRule still has beef with Eminem? I bet that’s working out really well for him. More

Don’t Waste Your Money Going to See Jay Z and Beyoncé’s ‘On the Run’ Tour
Music

Earlier today, hip-hop power couple Jay Z and Beyoncé announced that their cash-hungry “On the Run” tour would be grubbing it’s greedy way to Gillette Stadium on July 1. All across the Bay State, there was a resounding “YAAAAAAASSSS” heard through the streets, but all that elation is misplaced, because the On the Run tour will be an epic disappointment for all in attendance. It’s almost unfair how spoiled we are this weekend. Touring band after touring band, all rolling through on the same weekend of a national pot-smoking holiday? Seriously, this was like the greatest coincidence ever. Anyway, there are more than enough shows to check out this weekend, the challenge will be choosing wisely. More

Will Sheff
Okkervil River’s Will Sheff talks New Hampshire roots, desire to avoid stardom
Music

When New Hampshire-born Will Sheff, frontman of veteran folk rockers Okkervil River, returns to Boston to play The Sinclair on Saturday, he’ll once again be performing in a mid-size venue to fans, relatives and old friends. This time, though, he’s returning to New England in support of an album inspired by his hometown, Meriden, New Hampshire, and his youth. “The Silver Gymnasium,” a nostalgic autobiography of a ten year-old Sheff in 1986, continues Okkervil River’s legacy as introspective, niche, career musicians. If Okkervil River don’t ever break mainstream — and if Sheff has a say, they may not want to — this album does put the frontman’s small town on the map. More

Interview: Smash It Dead Fest spreads punk and awareness over Cambridge
Music

It didn’t take long for Boston’s Smash It Dead Fest to start to establish a following within the national punk scene. Now in it’s fourth year, the three-day festival, which will take place this weekend at the Cambridge YMCA and the Democracy Center, has become recognized for not only luring both well-known and local  hardcore and punk outfits, but also for serving as an annual meeting place for people looking to further the conversation about rape culture, anti-oppressive politics, safer spaces, and inclusion within the punk community. Shake off that St. Patrick’s Day hangover and go see some music. Spring break is over, kids. The only things here to get you from now to summer vacation are the tiny victories. This may mean treating yourself to some junk food, a night at the movies, or a case of tasty beer. It may be a better use of your precious pennies, however, to get out to your local music venue and just vibe. More
