Nightmares on Wax, the pioneering British electronic producer George Evelyn, is coming to the Paradise tonight to celebrate 25 years of making records. Sure there are a million and a half anniversary tours occurring at any moment in 2014, that NOW is still making vital music in the electronic realm — notorious for high turnover and high burn out rates — is a reason to celebrate. Think about it for a second: In 1989 “the Simpsons” were brand new, the Soviet Union was still a thing and the World Wide Web was just a twinkle in Tim Berners-Lee’s eye. A lot has changed over the years — laptop computers weighed 14 pounds! — but the music of Nightmares On Wax is still ahead of the curve. We caught up with Evelyn to talk challenges, changes and tech over the last two and a half decades. More
The Gainesville, Florida band Hundred Waters’ latest album, “The Moon Rang Like a Bell,” (which was released on May 27 via Skrillex’s OWSLA label) is an intimate, nocturnal album of atmospherics, whispering in your ear and quietly getting under your skin. The production is immaculate and detailed, practically begging for repeat listens. Frontwoman Nicole Miglis’s gorgeous voice, along with her vivid, dreamlike lyrics, fills out the band’s electronic yet earthy soundscapes, coiling around each other with the unity of two lovers. The album has received critical acclaim, further marking Hundred Waters as an act to keep your eye on. More
Summer concerts are what life is all about. That is, if your life is about getting rad and doing things that are fun and not being lame. Some of the best shows of the summer are on their way to being sold out though, so you better not snooze or you might be the lame one in your group of friends being forced to watch “Lave at Daryl’s House” on your couch instead of going to see bands shred live. The following Boston concerts are within spitting distance of selling out, so act accordingly. More
Reigning Sound’s Greg Cartwright doesn’t take too kindly to the term “legend.” Despite being a prolific cornerstone in punk music for over two decades (past projects include Compulsive Gamblers, Oblivians, Deadly Snakes, and Detroit Cobras), he maintains a sweet and down-to-earth stance on not being classified as one. “I’m flattered, but I don’t take any of that seriously,” he says with a slight chuckle. Barry Gibb comes to town this week. Luckily, you’re not a middle aged man and don’t have any old bell bottoms to dust off. Instead, there are some fine rock options all over town to weigh. More
Looks like we may be experiencing some inclement weather this weekend, so rather than going forth with that really long bike ride you were planning, change your entire schedule around to be at one of these concerts. Don’t try and play like indoor concerts are only a winter thing, okay? Some of the best punk sweat comes out in the spring and summer, don’t deprive yourself of that. More
Lots of big tickets rolling through town this week, which makes you wonder if Boston is becoming one of those cities where bands don’t want to waste a weekend night on us, so they tour through here on Mondays and Tuesdays instead. No hope in stressing it I guess. If anything, it’s just more of an excuse to party in the middle of the week. More
Some of you may take this weekend to watch hockey, or basketball, or Football drafts, or soccer, and to that we say, quit being such a dweeb jock and go see some shows. Sports are so high school, bro. More
We’re into May (thank God), and there’s plenty of groovin’ to be had. If folklore has me correct, I believe the more shows that people attend is directly linked to how nice the weather is. If that’s not enough motivation, I’m not really sure what is. Go see some music this weekend. More
