Amidst a satisfying heap of open chords and rustic fingerpicking, the placid vocal delivery of Ian White turns “Blue Eyes, Red Eyes,” into a pleasantly serene lullaby. A love song in sentiment, White’s calming brand of soul makes for a tune that’s best left in its bare-bones acoustic state. While harmonies add some engagement to the mix, they at times don’t lock up in full, reflective of its bedroom recording style. White’s grasp on structure and harmony are where they need to be, but with some time in a studio, his balladry could both tighten up and gain some dimensionality.
