Capitalizing on the success of “The Book of Mormon” before it, “God Hates Musicals” takes to the stage to tell the story of David Phelps, a Westboro Baptist Church member questioning the diatribal community he’s been raised in. Now, I didn’t see the musical because it opened that day after my deadline and tickets are $25, but this has got to be good, right? The problem with taking up a target everyone universally hates is that you have to do it right for it to work, but there’s no way to go wrong here. Coupla gay jokes, coupla ironic character arcs. Boom, breakout success. Boston Magazine thought it was good. Pretty good indicator right there? I mean, those guys have got their fingers on the pulse of the Boston arts scene.
