Kyemah McEntyre’s prom dress just might be the most beautiful one we’ve ever seen. And she designed it herself.
McEntyre, a high school senior from East Orange, New Jersey, said she had previously been labeled as “ugly” or “angry.”
She wanted to challenge the orthodox ideas of beauty that reign over prom season. By designing a dress that paid homage to African culture and prints, McEntyre proved that having—and sharing—your unique perspective can be the most beautiful accessory of all.
“I am an aspiring artist who is very passionate about the connection between art and the world,” McEntyre wrote in an Instagram post. “I believe that in order for society to gain a wider horizon, we have to be willing to acknowledge other people’s different morals, beliefs and values.”
Markell, a New Jersey based designer, made the dress but it was McEntyre’s sketches that brought the creation to life. Hoping to pursue a career in fashion, Kyemah will be headed to Parsons School of Design in the fall.
Oh, and Kyemah was crowned Prom Queen. Because duh.
