Pedro Martinez was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame yesterday, a no-brainer for voters.
Pedro won three Cy Young awards, appeared in eight All-Star games, and posted the second-highest winning percentage in modern baseball history. He was spectacular throughout his 18-year career.
He also said some pretty amazing things along the way.
Pedro Martinez: not a man who cared for Curses.
As a member of the Expos in 1995, Pedro became only the second player in history to lose a perfect game into extra innings. Upon being told that Pirates pitcher Harvey Haddix had suffered a similar fate in 1959, Martinez’s response was priceless.
Pedro, when asked if he meant to hit the Yankees’ Karim Garcia in the 2003 ALCS.
Thanks for the memories, Pedro. (And the soundbites.)
