Spend five minutes on the Internet and it becomes immediately clear how many people nostalgically pine for the Nickelodeon TV shows of their youth. Rugrats, Kenan and Kel, Ren & Stimpy… the list goes on and on. As it turns out, Nickelodeon heard the voice of the people, and responded in the best way possible.
On October 5th, Nickelodeon will debut The Splat, a late-night block of programming that airs the most popular shows of the channel’s heyday daily on TeenNick from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
But The Splat is more than just old episodes of CatDog and Rocko’s Modern Life: According to a press release, The Splat will be an immersive retro experience, with the channel reviving specials like the Super Toy Run…
…and running classic interstitials and promos like the Opera lady.
The Splat will also feature a heavy social media component, which TeenNick SVP Keith Dawkins told The A.V. Club will be used to field requests for more obscure Nickelodeon shows.
“The multiple screen experience allows us to listen to the audience in ways we never could years ago,” [Dawkins said,] noting that while shows like The Adventures Of Pete And Pete might not be on the initial list of shows on the network, that doesn’t mean they won’t show up down the road—provided there’s demand. “It’ll all be based on what the audience tells us they want,” says Dawkins.
