Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan are having a baby.
The Facebook founder and CEO announced the news to his 33 million followers July 31 on his Facebook page. (Where else?)
The post featured a picture of the smiling couple and their dog, Beast.
It also included a very personal message from Zuckerberg, in which he discusses a struggle that many couples face but that’s not often talked about publicly: miscarriage.
In the post, Zuckerberg writes that Chan (whom he calls “Cilla”) has had three miscarriages.
“You feel so hopeful when you learn you’re going to have a child,” he writes. “You start imagining who they’ll become and dreaming of hopes for their future. You start making plans, and then they’re gone. It’s a lonely experience.”
You can (and should) read the whole post here.
Zuckerberg and Chan starting dating when they were both students at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the early 2000s. They have been together ever since.
And now Zuckerberg is using his online influence to help spark a conversation about a difficult topic.
“In today’s open and connected world, discussing these issues doesn’t distance us; it brings us together. It creates understanding and tolerance, and it gives us hope,” the post reads.
According to Zuckerberg, Chan and their baby are both healthy.
“Our pregnancy is now far enough along that the risk of loss is very low and we are very hopeful,” he says.
“We hope that sharing our experience will give more people the same hope we felt and will help more people feel comfortable sharing their stories as well.”
