Even an attempt to break a Guinness World Record for most people in one place wearing flannel couldn’t convince University of Maine students to show up to a football game.

The Guinness record for flannel-wearing is apparently only 1,090 — proving Guinness definitely wasn’t there for LCD Soundsystem’s farewell show at Madison Square Garden. But despite the University handing out free plaid bandannas to every game attendee to guarantee plaid compliance, only around 1,000 fans showed up, leaving the school just short.

University of Maine is A) a university with over 11,000 students, and B) in Maine, so it’s a safe bet that there are at least 8,000 plaid-clad individuals wandering the Orono campus at any given point. The only challenge left for University administrators to breaking the Guinness record was to get enough students wearing two plaid items to actually show up and cheer on the Black Bears against University of New Hampshire.

Those are some pretty empty bleachers. To add insult to injury, Maine lost, 20-12.
