The internet almost broke when director J.J. Abrams announced the cast for “Star Wars: Episode VII.” Shortly thereafter, our pal Perry Eaton from BDCwire put together this handy-dandy guide to the non-Mark Hamill/Carrie Fisher/Harrison Ford cast members, which certainly is worth a look. Now, I’m not the type of Star Wars nerd who boasts an encyclopedic knowledge of the films, but I am the type of Star Wars nerd who’s seen the first three films an absurd number of times and I’m pretty excited about the prospect of an Episode VII. And I’m a music nerd by profession, so I got to thinking about where the two intersect, and that led to this list. I hope you enjoy it.
1. | Wu Tang Clan “Get Them Out Ya Way Pa” |
That’s U-God with the Death Star reference, son.
2. | Taking Back Sunday “A Decade Under The Influence” |
“I’ve got a bad feeling about this…” Sound familiar?
3. | Supernova “Chewbacca” |
From the “Clerks” Soundtrack, remember? Hell, there was even a scene in the movie about Star Wars.
4. | Nerf Herder “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” |
Cripes, the band named themselves after a Star Wars reference. And yeah, they’re the band responsible for the “Buffy” theme.
5. | Kool Keith |
I’d be willing to bet Keith originally titled the song “Darth Vader,” but was advised by his legal team to tweak it so he wouldn’t get his wig sued off.
6. | Junior Senior “Move Your Feet” |
Pay close attention to the video and you’ll see the squirrel pull a Vader.
7. | Jamiroquai “Cosmic Girl” |
Sure, they have a song called “Use The Force,” but this one has waaaay more Star Wars references.
8. | The Hold Steady “The Swish” |
“I did a couple favors / for some guys who looked like Tuscan Raiders.” Yeah you did, Greg.
9. | Bloodhoung Gang |
“Cause I’m kinda like Han Solo / always stroking my own Wookie.” Only the Bloodhoung Gang would write a line like that.
10. | Blink 182 “A New Hope” |
A) It’s called “A New Hope.”
B) It’s about Princess Leia.
B) It’s about Princess Leia.
11. | Aquabats “Playdough” |
Shoutouts to nine Star Wars characters. See if you get ’em all.
12. | “Weird Al” Yankovic “Yoda” |
Clearly, the list starts here.
