Last month, local artists Michael J. Epstein and Sophia Cacciola wrote a poignant post on how difficult it is to survive as an artist in the city of Boston, and shared their bittersweet decision to move to Los Angeles. Their words and their decision have sparked a discussions city-wide on the role of the arts and artists in and around Boston, even motivating Mayor Marty Walsh to pen this piece for the Boston Globe. Michael and Sophia were kind enough to accept my invitation to host this month’s edition of Six Songs, sharing a half-dozen tracks from Boston musicians they’ll miss, and continuing the discussion. Adam Blye hosts local music podcast Mutiny on the Microphone, so naturally this edition of Six Songs ended up being a primer on what’s happening in the Boston music scene currently. Specifically, Adam spotlighted songs from bands playing the upcoming Boston Scene Party Showcase, which takes place September 12-14. Listen, then check out Adam’s playlist. More
New Highway Hymnal’s second full length album Reverb Room, starts off in full gear with a barnburner called “Loaded Fun.” It’s a fuzzed out sort of rockabilly track, reminiscent of the halcyon days of early 2000’s indie rock. Their music incorporates elements of psych, ’60s rock, and, aptly, endless reverb. Over the five years the band has been making music, they’ve developed a sound that envelops into a trance– what I would imagine walking into a smoke filled basement party in the ’60s would feel like. Pablo Picker isn’t all that different from any other local musician trying to make an honest living out of a creative drive. What separates Pablo from the rest of the pack, however, is an idea that allowed him to take his talents on the road– a US tour very different from most. More

{“data”:[{“type”:”text”,”data”:{“text”:”Although it’s a common music writing trope, \”hauntingly beautiful\” is an apt way to describe the band [IAN](http://eyyunn.bandcamp.com/). Lead singer and guitarist Jilian Medford sweetly croons tales of the heart both longing and sad. In recordings, Medford’s vocals are layered with lots of reverb, but underneath she is a powerful singer. I got a chance to see her solo with just an electric guitar and a microphone \\(Elvis Costello style\\) in JP and learned this firsthand.\n”}},{“type”:”html”,”data”:{“text”:” More
