A Pixies album without Kim Deal? Whether we like it or not, it appears to be a deal. It seems that even after losing two bass-playing Kims (now recruiting Paz Lenchantin) in one year and self-releasing three short EP’s that, in comparison to rest of the band’s catalog, sounded like a band diminished, local legends Pixies will release a special edition of its forthcoming fifth studio album, “Indie Cindy” for Record Store Day 2014. For bands around the country, right around now is when the fun starts. With South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, just weeks away and better weather around the corner, young artists are starting to hit the open road. That is, except for one big series of obstacles: Young bands are broke, gas is expensive, and vans aren’t all that cheap. Transporting a bunch of musicians and equipment will never be a bargain, but thanks to Beverly-based rental company Greenvans, it can at least be suited to accommodate a touring band’s needs. More
When your band is breaking, sometimes it’s important to take a break. Buzzy psych-folk trio Quilt spent the majority of this year in a self-imposed tour hibernation, either home in Boston or in New York working on “Held In Splendor,” its sophomore record due out on Mexican Summer in January. That is, except for one jaunt to Russia. Before the band’s show tonight at TT the Bear’s Place in Cambridge (along with Happy Jawbone Family Band and locals CreaturoS), lead singer Anna Rochinski caught us up on its new 7-inch “Arctic Shark,” the upcoming full-length, and getting flown halfway across the world with her band mates, John Andrews and Shane Butler, to play the one-year celebration of a venue/café in Moscow.
