A few weeks ago, Russian feminist punk rock protest group Pussy Riot was freed from a Siberian prison camp. The trio was originally arrested after performing in a Russian Church and was incarcerated under the charge of “hooliganism” (leading to a fascinating film). Last night, the band appeared on “The Colbert Report,” because if anyone is almost as good at hating on Putin, it’s political funny man Stephen Colbert.
It came after two band members, Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina, did a press conference at Amnesty International’s New York offices, in which the two described how they were proud of their actions and glad to be arrested for it. Alyokhina also warned that today’s Russia is “not the Olympic Village you see on TV,” and that people need to “look beyond those buildings.”
On “The Report,” Colbert managed to be goofy despite the language barrier, and the two artists did a fine job reciprocating his wit, while still getting their message across. You can watch both halves of it below. Maybe next time we’ll get a performance, too.
