Staten Island’s PS22 chorus has sung with Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood, and O.A.R. These kids have performed at President Obama’s inauguration. They’ve even appeared at the Academy Awards.
But this specific performance is perhaps the most touching—and most important—of all:
Adriana Lopez is a teacher at PS22, and she’s recently been diagnosed with breast cancer.
She didn’t know it when she sat down in front of this kids’ chorus in the video above, but she was about to be treated to the best kind of sonic support.
Gregg Breinberg, the mastermind instructor behind PS22’s success, explains in the video that the chorus was so inspired by Mrs. Lopez’s fighting spirit and wanted to give something back to her during their final chorus practice of the year.
The kids then began singing Martina McBride’s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It.”
With lyrics such as, “When you feel lost and scared to death/ Like you can’t take one more step/ Just take my hand, together we can do it/ I’m gonna love you through it,” this song truly spoke to the fight Mrs. Lopez was battling and the love these kids were sharing.
The performance moved Mrs. Lopez to tears.
