Tuesday marks four-year-old Andrew Macias’s first day of pre-Kindergarten.

When Courtney Friel, a reporter at KTLA in Los Angeles, stopped him on his way into school and asked him if he was excited, Andrew told her that, oh, yes, he was very excited.

He didn’t know why he was excited. He was just so excited.

Was he going to miss his mom?, she asked him. No, he told her.

…And then he giggled one of those snickers we all use when we’re covering up our true emotions.

And then…

Oh, Andrew!

No shame, little guy: We do the same thing every year after we take a trip home for Thanksgiving.

This breaks my heart and now I'm anxious about sending my kids to school! He was trying to be so brave!
