Personally, I don’t really understand why Samsung loves to push gimmicks. Pens, watches, and wibbly-wobbly screens are all things that should be kept in a Hammacher Schlemmer catalog. But here comes Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Round, the world’s first curved display smartphone, already nicknamed “The Taco.”

Available in Korea starting Oct. 10, the Samsung Round features a rounded 5.7-inch, full high-definition super AMOLED display, 13-megapixel camera, and S Pen functionality. While I have my misgivings about such gimmicks, if it was between the iPhone and its lackluster hardware updates or something new and different with a Samsung Android phone, I would probably swing more toward Samsung these days.

Maybe a curved phone feels nice in your hand or is more comfortable for typing. It’s not something anyone has any real experience with yet, so I’ll reserve judgment on a curved phone until I get to hold one myself. However, experience points toward this device landing on a “weird phones of the past decade” list.

Would you give Samsung a chance with a curved display? What innovation would you like to see in your next smartphone?
