No, it wasn’t written by Adam Sandler. Thanksgiving is a time for turkey, football, and legendary local folk singer Arlo Guthrie’s “Alice’s Restaurant.” This 23-minute, mostly spoken epic (the original nudged about 18 minutes) recounts Woody’s son’s trials and tribulations over a particularly eventful Thanksgiving Day, in which he was arrested by an overzealous cop in Stockbridge for trying to illegally dispose of Alice’s garbage after the town dump was closed for the holiday. At least in between all of this fuss, Guthrie gets to have “a Thanksgiving dinner that couldn’t be beat.” Enjoy yours with a little music. Who knows? The song might outlast your dinner.
