Over 200,000 people wandered through Harvard Square on Sunday, making their way through the streets of Cambridge for Oktoberfest 2014. Founded in 1978, the afternoon event brings together street performers, local artisans, food trucks, and breweries for a 6-hour street fair. This unmistakably Cambridge interpretation of Oktoberfest—a tradition started in Munich, Germany circa 1810—also showcased some of the most prolific bands from the Honk parade, which ran its way into Cambridge earlier that day.
While there’s nothing particularly radical about alcohol on the streets of Harvard Square, on Sunday it was totally legal in designated drinking locations. An odd mix of brightly dressed musicians, professional potters, arts-and-crafts dealers, and opportunistic drinkers from local colleges made Cambridge just a little Cambridge than usual.
