Anime Boston took place this past weekend at the Hynes Convention Center. The event, now in its 12th year, gathers cosplayers, animators, and other industry professionals for three days of networking, gaming, and meeting likeminded anime fanatics. Did we mention that the cosplay is pretty next-level? Check out our photos of some of the characters at this year’s Anime Boston

Haley and Shalen - Jinx and Ashe – “League Of Legends” - “I really just love the diversity here and some really great cosplays here that you wouldn’t be able to see anywhere else.”

Anastasia and Connor - Genderbend Mario and Princess Peach - "Super Mario Bros." - “Well, I’m short, curvy, and Hispanic, and he’s white and lean, so, it worked out that way.”

Fredrick – Fred – “Big Hero 6” - “I liked his aloof personality, how he kind of just does what he feels, and doesn’t really take into account any negative energy that comes about from others and how they visualize what he’s doing.”

Christine Marie Cabanos - Voice Actress - “Anime takes animation to such a place that it’s no longer just a Saturday morning cartoon. It’s like art, it’s beautiful. You can tell how much work they put into it and I think everybody feels that. I think that’s why it has such a huge fanbase. It proves that animation is not just for children it’s for everybody.”

Kyla and Chelsea - Miguel and Tulio – “The Road To El Dorado” - “We have a spiritual connection with those characters. We feel them in our everyday lives. We knew we had to cosplay as them because they are us.”

Casey Anne - Genderbend Koga – “Inuyasha” - “I grew up with Inuyasha. It was one of the animes that got me into anime which is why it’ll always be special to me.”

Kendra Kristen - Slumber Party Joker – “Batman” - “I figured I wanted to do fem-Joker, I had Batman styled pj’s and a Batman plushie, and I figured why not.”

Thomas - Valkenhayn R. Hellsing – “Blazblue” - “I love this character, his personality, a werewolf German martial artist butler to a vampire princess, so you know, he’s got that whole dapper gentlemanly thing going on.”

Cassandra Lee Morris - Voice Actress - “Attending cons has been really awesome. You get to interact face to face with people who are watching the shows you are on. It’s an interesting experience as nine times out of ten when recording a session it’s just me alone in a booth. So coming to a convention is kind of surreal seeing that your work has reached a much larger audience than you think.”

Shawn - Dr. Franken Stein – “Soul Eater” - “Something about him as a character just resonated with me. He’s slightly off, I’m slightly off. Plus, who wouldn’t want a giant bolt going through their head?”

Sparrow’s Song Entertainment - Minnie Mouse – “Disney” - “I actually just finished up a five month internship at Walt Disney World and I wanted to pay homage to my previous bosses and my main squeeze, Minnie.”

Shibani, Siobhan, Kayla – Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, and Yang Xiao Long – “RWBY” - “They’re such an awesome team and we really wanted costumes that could go together and what’s better than a team to do.”

Greg Ayres – Voice Actor, DJ - “I’ve been DJing professionally longer than I have acting. Music has always been a huge part of my life. Con dances for the longest time use to just be a computer with a playlist with a bunch of DDR music, usually not a lot of thought given to the light or sound system. It’s come a long way since then. It’s just something I do that I really enjoy at conventions.”

Yoko Shimomura – Video Game Composer - “One of the sounds we can’t have anymore that I’m very fond of is from the Super Famicom (SNES) days. Back then the sound chip was just so evolved you could do an almost orchestral sound, but it wasn’t quite there. It’s that gap that gave a real challenge. It’s that limitation that I miss the most.”

GlitchCos, Boston’s Deadpool, Pat – ProtoMan, MetalMan, MegaMan – “MegaMan” - “MetalMan took about three months, same with MegaMan, ProtoMan was my first one that took six months as it was a huge learning curve. Had to remake the boots three times, kept adding pieces like the shield, and just making it better with every iteration I made.”

Cherami Leigh - Voice Actress - “I love stories that make you think, I love characters that make you think, but if I don’t finish watching a movie or finish working on something and I’m not tired I don’t feel like I’m fully engaged with it.”

Human Sushi Cosplay - Yuuko Ichihara – “xxxHOLiC” - “This is my second embroidery project ever. I like to do hand-detailing so I wanted to just go all out in terms of hand embroidery, hand painting, hand beading, just kind of work on perfecting those skills.”

Joseph – Freakazoid – “Freakazoid” - “Freakazoid is the original Deadpool, just think about it. I’m definitely having a lot of fun with it.”

Key0fDestiny13 Cosplay – Fierce Deity Link – “The Legend Of Zelda: Majora’s Mask” - “Link is just an overall awesome character. He’s a badass, somewhat dopey at times, but there’s so many awesome versions of Link, and I mean, in the end, it’s just awesome to play the hero sometimes, albeit a more badass demonic version of him.”

Drew – Sander Cohen – “Bioshock” - “The whole point of Bioshock is a city that’s taken to extremes. Sander’s extreme is the artist without fear of any sort of censor and he takes it so insanely far that it creates such a great compelling character.”

Paulomatica Cosplay, Vivi Cakes Cosplay, Maiitsu – Kagura, Makota, Noel – “Blazblue” - “I remember seeing the artwork for it when Arc System Works announced it after Guilty Gear and I was just so excited to get my hands on this game. It’s one of my favorite fighters ever and I just love dressing up like this.”

Kiki’s Cosplay Service, Dancing Fool Cosplay – Odette, Odile – “The Swan Princess” - “I think fantasy in general reminds people of the magic and dreams they experienced as kids or adventures they went on through books and movies, and it gives us an escape from our regularly scheduled lives”

Kyla Cosplay – Alice (Late But Lucky design) – “Alice: Madness Returns” - “I love that cosplay is just another way to be creative. Anything I can do to kind of have a creative outlet I will do so drawing, cosplay, you name it I’ll try it.”

James – Jafar – “Aladdin” - “I was actually just looking for something new to cosplay and I needed something with facial hair, hence Jafar.”

David Blum – Deathstroke – DC Comics - “I just think he has a cool look to him. Last year I came as Flashpoint Batman and I kind of like the Batman sort of universe so I just wanted to do something other than Batman this year and Deathstroke appealed to me.”

Kirke – Lord Yupa – “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” - “My daughter she got into anime a few years ago and we went to a few conventions and I said, ‘hey, if I’m gonna go to these conventions I might as well dress up.’ But it’s funny, I’ve done photo meetups with other Ghibli folks, most of them are college age, but age doesn’t seem to matter. Age sort of melts away when it comes to cosplay.”
Haley and Shalen - Jinx and Ashe – “League Of Legends” - “I really just love the diversity here and some really great cosplays here that you wouldn’t be able to see anywhere else.”
