TNT broadcaster and Inside the NBA host Ernie Johnson won Outstanding Sports Personality — Studio Host at the 36th annual Sports Emmy Awards last night. He beat out a deserving group of nominees, including the late ESPN anchor Stuart Scott, who passed away earlier this year after a battle with cancer.
But Johnson didn’t keep the award for long.
After thanking ESPN for crossing network lines to do a profile on his family (including his four adopted children, one of whom has muscular dystrophy and lives on a ventilator), Johnson dedicated the award to Scott.
“As for this,” Johnson said, gesturing to the award. “There’s only one place it belongs, and that’s on the mantle at Stuart Scott’s house.”
In a classy move, he called Scott’s daughters Taelor and Sydni to the stage to a standing ovation.
“Like a lot of people in this room, I loved your Dad,” Johnson said. “Having gone through cancer, I would tell him […] you may have cancer, but it doesn’t have you.”
Johnson finished his speech by saying “We loved Stuart Scott — this is your Emmy,” before handing the award to Scott’s daughters.
Scott’s former ESPN colleagues hailed Johnson’s gesture.
