Charlie Chesterman, lead man for Boston band and college radio favorite Scruffy the Cat, has died, according to the group’s Facebook fan page. The band was in constant rotation left of the dial throughout the late ’80s with hits like “My Baby She’s Alright,” and after they disbanded Chesterman went on to become something of a pioneer in the local roots and alt-country scenes as a member of the Harmony Rockets and as a solo performer. Friends had recently launched a tribute campaign to help pay for his hospital bills as Chesterman battled cancer.
