Could anything be more Canadian than building an ice-skating highway?
Probably not, eh? Well, unless you’re skating to a hockey game with a Tim Hortons roll-up coffee eating a nanaimo bar but that’s really beside the point. More

With the winter weather here in full force, we have finally come to terms with it. Instead of staying inside hibernating until the birdsongs of spring hit the air, we’ve decided to brave the cold and head outside in this gorgeous winter wonderland. With images of pirouettes and graceful glides in our minds, we decided to check out the best ice-skating rinks accessible by public transportation. Have no fear if you are skateless, all rinks covered have rentals on site. Bust out your mittens and hats and get ready to rosy your cheeks (hopefully just your top set if you’re a good skater!). The Martha’s Vineyard everyone knows is a bustling island off the coast of Massachusetts, filled with boutique shops, restaurants, and renowned beaches, where even the President vacations. Summers are filled with festivals and outdoor theater performances, as the island hums with activity and visitors from all over the world. More
I think it’s time to address the elephant in this column: when I proposed this series, it wasn’t quite Winter yet. For those of you who have not spent hundreds of Winters in Boston, you might find it hard to believe, but everyone in the entire city is usually completely miserable by now. More
Here in Boston, finals week is one of the few times when we expect places like Allston to quiet down a bit in the evenings. Most students lock themselves in libraries for days as they try to catch up on hundreds of pages of readings they never did, write paper after paper, and cram a semester’s worth of information into their brains before their big tests. But according to data collected by Boston-based party-planning app Wigo, 40% of students at Suffolk University didn’t let finals week stop them from partying, a percentage higher than any other college in New England. Babson College in Wellesley also made the top five in the region. More
Not to freak anyone out, but it’s halfway through December, and it’s time to actually start thinking about gifts for the holidays. Some people have a long-term significant other to worry about buying just the right gift for, and while that does have its stresses, it’s not nearly as awkward as trying to figure out what to get someone you just starting seeing. You have to get them SOMETHING – and this guide will help make the process less painful. More
Let’s say you and a friend or two spent last Friday night checking out Loretta’s Last Call, Fenway’s newish Bro Country-themed bar and restaurant. The place was packed, a Nashville band decked out in flannel crooned on stage, and everything smelled like it’d been fried three ways from Sunday by Paula Dean. A few minutes in, you noticed the Texas flag in the corner, draped along the bar and flanked by a few dozen drinkers eyeing the rest of the crowd. You probably thought the symbol of former president George W. Bush’s home state was an obvious contribution to the atmosphere of the place. More
For the last ten years, Greg M. Epstein has been the Humanist Chaplain at Harvard University. The role started simply – he was to mentor and work with the school’s atheist, agnostic, and humanist population – but since 2013, when the group opened a meeting space called the Humanist Hub, he’s found himself working with a much larger community that includes frequent visitors from as far away as New Hampshire and Vermont. The effort to build a skate park under the Zakim Bridge has long been caked in toxic soil, twisted in bureaucracy, and snagged by miscommunication. The Charles River Conservancy (CRC), the Cambridge non-profit that spearheaded the project more than 10 years ago, exceeded its initial goal of raising $1.1 million for the park in 2006. Yet as of today, eight years later, the designated spot remains a brown field. More
