After ceding the role of Jason Bourne to Jeremy Renner in “The Bourne Legacy,” Matt Damon has agreed to return to the successful film franchise.
While Damon walked the red carpet with Boston buddy Ben Affleck to promote the reemergence of their HBO show “Project Greenlight,” Affleck inadvertently spilled the beans about Damon’s upcoming role.
“Well, [Damon’s] going to be doing a Bourne movie next fall when I’ve just completely lost any semblance of physical fitness. So….,” Affleck told E! News exclusively.
“Yes, next year,” Damon responded to E! News when asked for clarification. “It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. [Director] Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.”
This is good news for everyone — except for Jeremy Renner and “Bourne Legacy” director Toby Gilroy. Greengrass spent his time away from the Bourne franchise well, directing the Damon vehicle “Green Zone” and the Oscar-nominated “Captain Phillips.”
Given that previous reports suggested Damon would not be involved in the film, this was a pretty big spill of the beans by Ben. Though Matt got his revenge on Affleck the same way I would get revenge on my best friend: by telling everybody about his penis.
