Notorious Boston-hating gossip rag Gawker published another craven pageview grab thinly disguised as a March Madness-style bracket to determine America’s ugliest accent, and lo and behold, Boston is the number one overall seed. The Manhattan provocateurs have made a living talking smack about our fair city, and the round-by-round tournament updates should provide plenty of additional opportunities for their trademark snark.
Disregarding the fact that each of NYC’s five boroughs could win this contest on their own, is it really such a bad thing that Boston is leading this contest? The ugliness of an accent is purely subjective, so in this case, Boston might as well be the number one seed in America’s Most Distinctive Accent contest. So instead of descending on Gawker with your New York-hating vitriol, go vote for Boston, where we’re wicked proud of our accents and show up to Fenway Pahk to root for the Sawx even when they’re teh-rible.
In the meantime, feel free to watch this video of Fran Drescher’s nails-on-chakboard Queens dialect from “The Nanny” to remind yourself what a truly ugly accent sounds like.
